The UNI Americas Scotiabank Union Alliance holds meeting in Lima with union leaders from Latin America and the Caribbean
From May 15 to 17 in Lima, Peru, members of the UNI Americas Scotiabank Union Alliance, comprised of BWA Barbados, BIGWU Trinidad & Tobago, GTAWU Grenada, BFSU Bahamas, AEBU Uruguay, SINECREDISCOTIA and SINTRACSI Peru, met to discuss workers' problems, design the organising strategy to be carried out in the Bank, and to continue strengthening the unions.
During the meeting, union leaders noted Scotiabank's same behaviour in both the Caribbean and Latin America, i.e. the systematic violation of freedom of association and organising rights, the increase in job outsourcing and the Bank's refusal to negotiate collective agreements freely.
Participants also held a meeting with the president of the Peruvian Labour Commission, Congressman Hernando Cevallos Flores, to talk about bank workers' problems and to request the necessary legislative support to effectively respect their rights.
Similarly, the Alliance participated in the Swearing in of FETBANF's new Authorities; were present handing out flyers in the Banco de la Nación de Perú, and attended a mobilization with assemblies outside the headquarters of the following banks: Continental BBVA, Scotiabank, Mi Banco, Banco Azteca, BCP, Banco Falabella, Banco Ripley, CrediScotia, Financiera Scotiabank and Seguros Rimac.
Union action ended on Friday 19th when a statement prepared by the Alliance was distributed outside Scotiabank and CrediScotia with the support of La Bancaria and AEBU. The objective was for workers to be informed of the action plan and to report the Bank's breaches.
