Gender balance in union work and mentoring women to leadership roles on the agenda of UNI MEI Women
The annual meeting of UNI MEI Global Women Working Group took place in Brussels on 16 October 2017. The agenda included an update of the equality situation from the different countries, a session on portrayal of women in media - focusing on gender-stereotyping in advertising -, and a session on the Mentoring Programme of the UNI Equal Opportunities Department.
Several unions have signed up to the 40for40 campaign since the previous meeting of the group and changes are already taking place. The working group decided to implement a survey among UNI MEI affiliates to establish what the situation is with the implementation of the 40for40 campaign as well as to get more systematic data on the gender balance in union structures.
Mentoring is a tool that can greatly benefit individual women in unions, but also the union through increased expertise and capacity. There is interest within the group to see how mentoring can be implemented in their unions. UNI MEI and UNI EOD will provide support to all those who wish to launch mentoring activities.
The Women Group will convene for the next time on 16 March 2018 to follow up on the survey, to take the mentoring initiative forward, and to discuss a joint project of the group on portrayal.
